Gigantic Glass

This stairwell window in a Wicker Park mansion is nearly 5′ wide by 10′ tall. We assisted our stained glass partner with removing it for cleaning and restoration.
Many of the hundreds of pieces of glass were cracked or broken, and some of the lead had deteriorated since it had been installed in the house in the 1880’s.
The exterior of the window had been covered with two layers of plexiglass, which had severely clouded over the years. Additionally, the horizontal bars on the exterior panels caused shadow lines across the stained glass.
We built a new arched top wood storm window incorporating real glass. The beauty of the window is now unmarred when viewing from either the interior or exterior.
